Bloom transfer (via Plainfield East) Christian Shumate said he only has a few college offers on the table so far. "I have like 6 or 7. Chicago State, Lewis, Grambling State, Missouri Western, Southern Utah and I forgot the sixth one."
After leading the #1 ranked Bloom Trojans to a 77-60 victory over the #6 ranked Marian Catholic Spartans in the 2019 Chicago Heights Classic championship, lots of mid/major D-1 schools should be knocking at his door. Shumate was definitely the best player on the floor scoring 28 points and snatching 11 rebounds. He also had his own personal block party as he rejected 10 Spartan attempts at the rim while dropping 7 dimes.
I heard Shumate was a hooper but he was much more than I expected and definitely worth the price of admission!
Marian took a 49-48 lead into the 4th quarter but the athleticism and talent of the Trojans was too much as they outscored MC 29-11 in the final 8 minutes. Keshawn Williams (15 pts) had 2 "AND 1's" & a Dante Maddox Jr. (14 pts) dunk sealed the deal down the stretch. Donovan Newby chipped in 12 points to round out the double figure scoring.
The Trojans have four D-1 commits. 6-9 center Martice Mitchell signed with Minnesota, Maddox Jr. with Cal-State Fullerton, Newby with Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Williams is headed to Tulsa. Shumate will likely be the fifth and with a performance like yesterday's, major offers should be in his future.
I asked Bloom head coach and good friend of mine Dante Maddox what his message to his guys was after signing. "Do the right thing. School first, basketball second and go out there and represent your community and team in a positive way."
University of Iowa commit Ahron Ulis led 3 Marian Catholic players in double figures with 19 points. Yemi Elutilo had 13 and Joe Green finished with 10. Marian is a well coached team but they looked tired and outmatched down the stretch.
